Forecast looked promising all week so was hopin to get my first session in
for the year. Arrived there to find a kiter who had come over form
middleton sands and about 10 other windsurfers already out. Conditions
looked pretty gusty and a bit ify at times.
It had been blowin pretty strong all mornin back home so I only took my 80
litre board which was a bad mistake. I rigged my 6.3 and got out there.
Managed one run out and a nice gybe without a dunking and then back again
planing all the way.
Went out again and then really struggled like hell for 20 mins or so as my
boom had slipped right down the mast with me unaware so trynna struggle
with it. Realised what the problem was and then got going fine again and
then there were big lulls where it was real hard work with the gusty
conditions with such a small board. Was real unfit as well which didn't
help so my arms were dropping off. Was fighting to stay on the board and
then a big gust came through which catapulted me with a loud bang. The rope
on the sail attaching the cap to the top of the mast snapped so the sail
was slack as anything meaning there was no way I could sail back to
shorewith my sinker board.
The out going tide was super strong and I drifted past the lighthouse
faster than at walking pace which immediatley made me ditch the rig and
paddle back in. I tried to salvage the boom at first but it was a pain in
th arse trynna paddle lyin on top of the boom so ditched that as well.
Spent a good 40minutes trynna paddle back in and it felt as though I was
making no progress. I waved a couple of times to the people on shore for
help and then continued paddling back in.
The currents were real strong but I eventually made it back to shore a good
1/4mile from the launch point to meet Jeff and Ian who had seen me waving
for help as well as some other bystanders who had rang up the coast guard.
One of them made a cup of tea which was good of her. We cancelled the
coastguard asap but by the time I got to the launch point the coastguard
had arrived so explained to him what had happened.
A scary moment but its done me a favour in a way as im gonna have to get
some newish kit. Its not worth pissing around in the ocean with old kit
that can fail on you. Gonna have to get a loan first though for some new
kit!!
